Exhaust Wrap

If you own a car or motorcycle, especially a performance car or older car, you are aware how intensely hot it gets under the hood. The intense heat can cause

engine component failures, diminished performance, and discomfort if you are riding on a motorcycle. There are, fortunately, certain products available that can control the amount of heat your car or motorcycle is generating.  Exhaust wrap is a tape specifically designed to be wrapped around the exhaust manifold pipes of cars and motorcycles. In this article and website, we are going to talk about the benefits of using exhaust tape, how to install it, and where to buy it.

Exhaust wrap is basically a form of insulation that is meant to keep heat within the exhaust.  Keeping heat in the exhaust will keep the under-the-hood temperatures as much as 50% lower.   The internal components of the car will be better protected from the heat, and you will be able to go even faster without overheating your vehicle.  Exhaust wrap can increase the overall longevity of your car or motorcycle.

Insulating  your exhaust pipes and header will increase the temperature inside of the exhaust system and will increase the rate at which the hot air flows out of the car or motorcycle. Keep in mind, this will probably cause your car’s or motorcycle’s exhaust to be slightly louder as the air rushes out faster.  There are a few benefits to this however.  The increased air flow will increase the overall performance and horsepower of your vehicle. Also, the hot air leaving quicker will keep the rest of the automobile cooler which can be a large benefit if you ride a motorcycle that is getting uncomfortably hot.  Also, older and performance vehicles that tend to overheat can benefit from increase hot air evacuation.

Installation is fairly basic. If you are installing on a car, it is a good idea to have your vehicle safely lifted from the ground. You might want to wet the exhaust wrap which will make it easier to tightly wrap around your exhaust pipes.  Wetting the exhaust wrap will also make it easier to go around curves in your exhaust pipe.  Once you have covered as much of the exhaust pipes as you can, you will want to have clamps that will secure the wrapping on the ends. There are stainless steel exhaust wrap clamp ties made specifically for this purpose.

Exhaust wrap comes in rolls that are usually one or two inches wide and upwards of 50 feet long.  The wrap is usually black, but it does come in other colors which could be useful for motorcycles where the exhaust pipe is easier to see.  The price will depend on the amount of wrap that the roll contains and how much the manufacturer claims the wrap will reduce heat, but a standard roll of 2” by 15’ exhaust wrap will run about $15. You can find it at your local auto parts store or any of the popular online retailers.

A Breakdown of Titanium Exhaust Wrap

If you own or drive a high performance vehicle, you’d know how extremely hot the engine compartment gets. You may not know it or you may not notice it, but the

heat under the hood somehow affects the performance of the engine. If you reduce this heat, you can actually obtain more horsepower from your high performing machine. The problem now is how you can reduce the temperatures under the hood. Wouldn’t it be great if you could just add more exhausts or more fans to cool off the engine? However, this won’t work, especially if your vehicle runs at amazing speeds. A great way to reduce the heat from under the hood is to use a titanium exhaust wrap, which can possibly reduce the temperatures up to 50% when you install them on the headers and exhaust manifolds.

There are currently two exhaust wraps available in the market today: the fiber glass type and the titanium type. The problem with fiber glass exhaust wraps is that they’re quite hard to install, and would require you to spray coat it silicone in order to prolong its life. It’s quite cumbersome, especially if you have other things to do, or if you have no idea how to pull off these upgrades. On the other hand, the titanium exhaust wrap is easier to install. It is made from pulverized rock lava, offer better thermal protection, and allows for ease of installation. A simple technician could do this for you, or if you have sufficient background regarding these matters, you can easily do so given the right tools.

As mentioned earlier, the titanium exhaust wrap is made from pulverized lava rock, and can withstand excessive amount of temperatures. It can handle 1800 degrees Fahrenheit of direct heat, and indirect heat of around 2800 degrees Fahrenheit.  It outdoes the fiberglass wraps in this department by over 500 degrees Fahrenheit.

Installing the titanium exhaust wrap is quite easy, because they’re highly flexible and can be bent to shape accordingly. Unlike fiberglass wraps which has to be installed when wet, titanium wraps can be installed as is, with no special coating for protection. After it has been wrapped with a quarter of an inch overlap, they can now be secured and strapped on both ends using stainless steel ties.

So if you want to get the most horsepower out of your performance vehicle, make sure that you keep the heat under the hood down by using titanium exhaust wrap. Not only will you get more power from the engine, you’re also able to prolong the engine life with these exhaust wraps.
